A brief biography (historie česky je dole)
In the beginning, there were a few friends who hungered to have a band of their own, but had no songs to play. For that reason they decided to do a few covers of songs by The Cure, a band which all of them quite liked, until they had enough of their own material. At that time they had absolutely no idea that they actually sealed their musical fates forever. The boys agreed on calling the band Deep Decline after considering other variants like Soumrak (The Dusk) or Decline. They learned to play about 20 Cure songs, some of which they presented for fun at a student college in Prague. They were still firmly committed to start writing own songs.
The birth of a revival
The Cure itself was to some extent responsible for what happened next. In Autumn 1992 the British group failed to show up in Prague, leaving thousands of Czech fans hungry for hearing their favorite songs live. Such a demand could not be left without response. The Czechoslovak revival scene in the early 90’s merely consisted of The Velvet (Underground) Revival or Abba Revival. So Deep Decline became the first Czech band to dare to do a revival of a still existing group. That’s how they contributed to the outbreak of Czech revival bands in the following years, for which they claim full responsibility. However, they still aimed to write their own songs.
Original songs – first try
In the autumn of 1993, after almost a year of performing live with The Cure covers, the band got accustomed to sold-out gigs and decided to make a big change. The band’s name was shortened to Decline, some personnel changes were made and the guys presented the audience with a new set of original songs with Czech lyrics. The wild-haired audience waited in vain for “Boys Don’t Cry” and finally left the band, which in the summer of 1994, in accordance with its name, began to decline.
The revival’s revival
After a year and a half of nostalgia, the boys couldn’t resist and reunited as Deep Decline The Cure Revival. Of course, the comeback was meant to be followed by putting together an original repertoire, but this time in a different way. Knowing the fickleness of the audience, in Spring 1997 they started to enrich their concerts with their own songs. The rate of their own material began to grow and then the boys, just for the fun of it, did “Behind the wheel” by Depeche Mode, played with more of a rock feel. Playing Depeche Mode songs on guitars was originally just a joke, but the band started to enjoy it so much, that they gradually added other hits too. Deep Decline began to be popular among Depeche Mode fans, while The Cure fans got a little confused.
Original songs – second try
Then came the breaking year of 1998. The band again shortened the name to Decline, started working on new songs and signed a recording contract. The first album “Podzim” (Autumn) ruthlessly revealed the destructive influence of all those years spent by covering The Cure, had been. Nevertheless, the record label wanted to have a “rock kind of a boy-band” in their catalogue, so it kept pushing on and on. Decline performed, wrote new songs and in 2000 recorded their second album “Den se otočí” (The day will turn around), which was professionally produced in the best recording studio in the country. Expectations were high, however, no massive success followed. The record company began to focus on more lucrative projects, the band got tired and frustrated. In 2001 the guys managed to do a 10th anniversary concert, during which the audience heard Decline’s own songs for the last time. And then they said good-bye.
A happy end once a year
The members of the band stayed friends even after splitting up and it didn’t take them long to begin to miss playing together. But they didn’t have the energy to build the band again, to make it function on regular basis. And so Deep Decline meets once or twice a year on stage to enjoy what they do best - and that is playing The Cure and Depeche Mode covers.
Stručná historie Deep Decline
Na počátku byla parta mladých kamarádů, kteří toužili po hraní v kapele, ale neměli písničky. Rozhodli se tedy, že předtím, než budou mít dost vlastního repertoáru, secvičí několik písniček převzatých od The Cure, které měli docela rádi. Tehdy ještě netušili, že jejich umělecké osudy jsou tím navždy zpečetěny. Po variantách Soumrak a Decline se název kapely ustálil na Deep Decline, kamarádi nazkoušeli dvacítku písní od The Cure a jako zajímavost předvedli svůj program na studentských kolejích. Stále pevně odhodláni vrhnout se na vlastní tvorbu.
Zrození revivalu
Za další vývoj událostí mohou do jisté míry sami The Cure, kteří na podzim 1992 nepřijeli do Prahy a nechali tisíce českých fanoušků hladových po tom, slyšet oblíbené písně naživo. Takovou poptávku nešlo nechat bez odezvy. Československá revivalová scéna tehdy zahrnovala snad jen Velvet (Underground) Revival či Abba Revival. Deep Decline se tak stali první kapelou, která si dovolila dělat revival stále existující skupiny a tím přispěli k vypuknutí epidemie českých revivalů, za což přiznávají plnou zodpovědnost. Pořád ale měli v plánu vlastní tvorbu.
Vlastní tvorba – pokus první
Na podzim roku 1993, po necelém roce koncertování s cureovským programem, kapela, zvyklá na vyprodané koncerty, zkracuje název na Decline, provádí personální změny a začíná se prezentovat vlastní tvorbou. Natupírované publikum je po marném čekání na Boys don’t cry opouští a Decline v polovině roku 1994 směřuje k úpadku.
Revival revivalu
Po roce a půl vzpomínání na společné hraní to chlapcům nedá a znovu dají dohromady Deep Decline The Cure Revival, samozřejmě se záměrem vrhnout se poté na vlastní tvorbu, ale tentokrát jinak. Poučeni předchozí nevěrností publika začínají od jara 1997 obohacovat koncerty revivalu o své vlastní věci. Poměr vlastní tvorby postupně utěšeně roste na úkor skladeb od The Cure a kapela víceméně z recese přidává také skladbu Behind the wheel od Depeche Mode, kterou pojímá rockověji. V kytarové interpretaci skladeb od DM, která měla být původně spíš vtípkem, nachází kapela zalíbení a postupně přidává další hity. Na koncerty začínají chodit depešáci, kjůráci jsou zmateni.
Vlastní tvorba – pokus druhý
Zlom přišel v roce 1998, kdy se kapela opět pod zkráceným názvem Decline opět naplno vrhá do vlastních písniček a získává nahrávací smlouvu. Natáčí své první album Podzim, které nemilosrdně odhaluje destruktivní vliv let strávených hraním The Cure. Firma ale chce mít ve svém portfoliu rockový boyband, a tak tlačí a tlačí. Kapela koncertuje, skládá nové písně a v roce 2000 natáčí v nejlepším studiu v zemi profesionálně zprodukované album „Den se otočí“. Očekávání jsou vysoká, leč masivní úspěch se nekoná, firma se soustředí na lukrativnější projekty, kapela je unavená a frustrovaná a rozpadá se. V roce 2001 ještě odehraje koncert ke svému desátému výročí, kde naposledy zazní její vlastní písničky, a poroučí se.
Jednou ročně happy end
Členové kapely zůstali i po rozpadu kamarády a společné hraní jim začalo chybět. K regulérnímu obnovení kapely už ale nikdo nenašel dost sil, a tak se Deep Decline od té doby jednou nebo dvakrát ročně scházejí na pódiu, aby si užili to, co jim vždy šlo nejlépe, předělávky písní The Cure a DM.
